Today I went There....

I was doing some searching around Google, as I often do, and I stumbled across a virtual world that I hadn't heard about before. It is called There.com and is pretty easy to get started with.

You will need to register for a free basic account. After that you must download the client program to enter the There virtual environment. The program comes in at around 87 MB. After that, you are ready to jump right in.

You will start out in a beach area. There are tons of people around if you need to ask help. I was able to quickly get some answers from the guy in the afro about how to change my avatar and outfit. He informed me that I would unfortunately have to drop some US dollars to buy some new threads.

After that I was quickly accosted by someone who stubbornly kept asking my age. After a few evasive responses, she finally ran off to harass someone else.

As I continued to explore the immediate area, I came across quite a few people, including one group that looked a lot like a late 90's boy band. I didn't attempt to engage them in conversation. Maybe another day.

I also found a hoverboat vehicle that would allow me to sit in it, but not drive it.
Very disappointing.

I finished my exploring at a place that I think was called "Club Cannery." When I entered the club, I was greeted by no one. I had a seat on a leopard-print couch and listend to Techno music as snow fell and a Christmas tree looked on in the background.

All in all, seems like there is definitely some potential for people to go and hang out in There.com. More on this world as I explore it further.

The Multiverse Blog begins...

Ever since I saw the Matrix in 2000 (not when it came, just when I finally discovered it), I have been fascinated by the idea of simulated reality. The concept of plugging yourself into a world and interacting with objects, programs, and other people in that world is a truly amazing prospect. While the Internet has given us the ability to log into a "virtual world" for many years, it is only recently that we can truly immerse ourselves in fairly realistic digital worlds.

This blog will catalog my travels throughout the various online virtual environments. I will try to stick to realms that are free. I think people are already well aware of the big names such as Second Life and the big MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft and City of Heroes and the like.

Thanks for checking in. I hope you stop back to see where I've been!
